With a few simple habits and a little help from My Shopkick, you can rebuild your balance fast and start the year feeling motivated instead of stuck.

The fastest way to see your kick balance grow again is with walk-in kicks. No purchase required, no planning needed.

Anytime you head to a participating store, open the Shopkick app and earn kicks just for walking in. Grocery runs, errands, or quick stops all add up, especially in January when you are already getting back into routines.

Pro tip: Check the Nearby tab in Shopkick before you head out so you do not miss easy walk-in opportunities.

When motivation is low, My Shopkick is your shortcut inside Shopkick.

Shopkick offers tons of ways to earn kicks, but My Shopkick pulls the most relevant ones to the front so you do not have to hunt for them. Your My Shopkick homepage is personalized to you, showing what will help you earn faster based on how you already use the app.

In My Shopkick, you will see:

• Your current kick balance and progress toward rewards
• Featured offers picked just for you
• Quick access to your favorite stores and brands
• Easy ways to earn kicks right now

If you are starting fresh after the holidays, My Shopkick turns Shopkick from “where do I start?” into “oh, that’s easy.”

You do not need to do everything to earn kicks. January is about consistency, not perfection.

Shopkick gives you options like scanning, receipts, walk-ins, and online shopping. My Shopkick helps you stick to the ones you actually use. If scanning is your go-to, focus on scan offers at stores you already shop. If receipts are easier, upload them after grocery trips. If walking is your thing, lean into walk-in kicks.

By highlighting your most-used earning methods, My Shopkick makes it easier to stay consistent and see results faster.

Starting from zero can feel intimidating, so aim small.

Instead of focusing on a big reward, set a short-term goal like earning enough kicks for a coffee gift card or a small treat. Seeing progress toward a reachable reward can reignite motivation and make earning kicks fun again.

You can track your progress directly in My Shopkick and adjust your goal as you go.

Seeing a zero balance after the holidays does not mean starting over from scratch. It means you used your kicks exactly how they were meant to be used.

Shopkick gives you all the ways to earn, and My Shopkick helps you earn smarter. With walk-in kicks, personalized offers, and a few simple habits, your balance will start climbing again before you know it.

Open the Shopkick app, tap into My Shopkick, and take your first step toward boosting your kicks this January.

Surprising Foods to Grill This Summer: 8 Unique Ideas

Grilling is one of our favorite summer pastimes — and it’s a perfect excuse to try some surprising foods to grill that go beyond burgers and hot dogs. Sure, we love classics like kebabs and hotdogs, but summer is the ideal time to get creative with new flavors and ingredients. From fruit to veggies to unexpected mains, these eight ideas will bring fresh inspiration to your next cookout.

1. Avocados:

Everything is better with avocado, right? Believe it or not, it tastes even more amazing when grilled! Let it cool and add it to egg or chicken salad, or mix it into your guac for a smoky twist.

How to Grill: Slice the avocado in half, remove the pit (but keep the skin), brush with oil, and grill for 2–3 minutes on each side.

2. Carrots:

Carrots are a staple in many family meals — and grilling brings out their natural sweetness even more. This is one of the most underrated yet surprising foods to grill.

How to Grill: Grill carrots in a pan with olive oil, rosemary, salt, pepper, and thyme. Cook for 10–12 minutes, adjusting the heat as needed.

3. Peaches:

Peaches are already delicious, but grilling them caramelizes the sugars and deepens the flavor. They work well in desserts, cocktails, or on their own.

How to Grill: Cut in half and place on the grill for 8–10 minutes until tender and lightly charred.

4. Pizza:

Skip the oven and head to the grill for pizza night. Grilled pizza creates a crisp, smoky crust that’s reminiscent of a wood-fired oven.

How to Grill: Use store-bought or homemade dough. Brush with oil, grill one side, flip, and add sauce, cheese, and toppings. Cook until the cheese is melted.

5. Watermelon:

Yes, grilled watermelon is a thing — and it’s a game-changer. Pair with feta in a salad or drizzle with lime juice for dessert.

How to Grill: Cut into wedges and grill for 4–6 minutes, flipping once. Add salt for savory dishes or lime for something sweet.

6. Lettuce:

Grilled romaine takes Caesar salad to the next level. It adds a smoky flavor that pairs perfectly with creamy dressing and croutons.

How to Grill: Cut romaine hearts in half, brush with oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and grill each side for 2–3 minutes.

7. Pineapple:

Sweet, juicy, and caramelized — grilled pineapple works with savory or sweet dishes. It’s also one of the easiest fruits to grill.

How to Grill: Place slices directly on the grill for 2–3 minutes per side, flipping occasionally.

8. Quesadillas:

Quesadillas get a crispy, golden finish on the grill that’s tough to beat. They’re also a great way to feed a crowd quickly.

How to Grill: Assemble your quesadilla, then grill both sides until the tortilla is golden and the cheese is fully melted.

5 Easy and Fun Crafts for Kids (No Screens Required!)

These five hands-on activities are simple, budget-friendly, and sure to bring out everyone’s creative side.

Let’s dive into the fun!

1. Homemade Play Dough

Why buy Play Dough when you can whip up a batch at home? With just flour, salt, water, and a bit of food coloring or paint, you’ll have a soft, squishy dough that’s perfect for tiny hands. Kids love helping with the mixing—and you’ll love how affordable it is.

Pro Tip: Check out Sea Lemon’s DIY recipe on YouTube for a quick tutorial.

2. Shaving Cream Marble Art

This one is messy in the best way. Just spread shaving cream in a shallow tray, drop in food coloring, swirl with a toothpick, and gently press a piece of paper on top. Peel back to reveal a swirling, marble masterpiece!

Want to try it? Follow this guide from Alice & Lois for step-by-step instructions.

3. Friendship Bracelets

Friendship bracelets never go out of style. With embroidery thread and a few simple knots, kids can create colorful accessories to gift or trade. It’s a great craft for groups or solo time—and it teaches patience and focus.

4. Cool Whip Bath Paint

For a creative (and edible!) bath time activity, mix Cool Whip with a few drops of food coloring. Let your little ones “paint” the tub, the tiles—or even themselves. It’s safe, easy to clean, and a total hit with toddlers. Inspired by Busy Toddler, this idea makes bath time a blast.

5. Classic Coloring Time

Sometimes the easiest activities are the most relaxing. Coloring is perfect for quiet time, and printable coloring pages make it fresh every time. Search online for free printables, grab crayons or markers, and let the imagination flow.

Hang finished masterpieces on the fridge or gift them to loved ones as homemade cards.

4 Easy Productivity Tips to Refresh Your Routine This Season

Do you ever feel the urge to reset when a new season rolls around? Same here. Whether it’s swapping in fresh recipes or reorganizing your space, that seasonal shift often brings a wave of motivation.

But instead of overhauling everything, let’s focus on one area: productivity.

Because one of the best feelings is ending your day knowing you spent your time well. Maybe that means crossing off your to-do list, sneaking in a workout, or enjoying family time. No matter how you define it, that “A+ day” feeling is worth chasing — and with a few tweaks, it can become your new normal.

Here are four easy productivity tips to help you get started.

1. Focus on the Small Picture

Big-picture goals can feel exciting — and overwhelming. That’s why it helps to break them into bite-sized wins.

Want to organize your closet? Don’t aim to do it all at once. Start by sorting just your t-shirts. Then group seasonal items. Those mini wins build momentum and help you make real progress one step at a time.

2. Set Three Daily Goals

Long to-do lists can be draining. Instead, focus on three key priorities for the day. For example:

✔ Go for a walk
✔ Submit a project
✔ Attend a soccer game

If you hit those three? Success. Everything else is a bonus. This approach helps reduce stress and increases your chances of actually feeling accomplished.

3. Create Screen-Free Boundaries

We all spend more time on screens than we’d like. Rather than going cold turkey, try these simple boundaries:

  • Charge your phone outside your workspace
  • Use app timers to limit distractions

  • Create “no phone” zones, like the dinner table or bedroom

Cutting screen time just a bit can lead to clearer focus and more meaningful moments.

4. Block Your Time

Structure your day into focus blocks. Group similar tasks together so you can give each one your full attention:

  • Morning: family time, morning walk

  • Mid-morning: reply to emails

  • Midday: deep work or a creative project

  • Afternoon: errands or admin tasks

Time-blocking prevents multitasking and adds calm structure to your day.

Bonus Tip: Reward Your Wins with Shopkick

Want to turn those productive errands into free rewards? Download the Shopkick app, where you can earn kicks (aka points) just for walking into stores, scanning items, uploading receipts, or shopping online. Then trade those kicks in for gift cards to your favorite stores.

It’s an easy way to stay productive — and make it more rewarding, too.

Your Seasonal Reset Starts Now

Remember: productivity doesn’t mean doing more. It means doing what matters, with intention. Start small, stay consistent, and define your version of a great day.

Have a productivity tip that works wonders for you? Share it with us on Facebook or Instagram — we’d love to hear it!

Save Big with These Last-Minute Holiday Shopping Tips

Believe it or not, we’ve officially made it to mid-December — and if it feels like the month is flying by, you’re not alone. Hanukkah is well underway, and Christmas is just around the corner. With holiday to-do lists growing by the minute, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed — especially when it comes to staying on budget.

The good news? It’s not too late to save. Whether you’re checking off the final gifts or prepping for celebrations, these five last-minute holiday shopping tips will help you keep spending in check — while still embracing the season.

1. Watch for Last-Minute Sales

Retailers (both big and small) are rolling out daily deals in a final push to hit their end-of-year goals. Flash sales — especially on clothing, accessories, and beauty — can pop up quickly, so staying alert is key.

To get ahead, sign up for your favorite store’s emails and check their websites regularly. You might catch that perfect gift at a fraction of the price.

2. Redeem Your Kicks

If you’re a Shopkicker, don’t forget about your kicks! Check your balance and redeem those hard-earned points for digital gift cards.

Whether you’re shopping for toys, tech, or last-minute stocking stuffers, using kicks to offset your total is a win. Even a small reward can help ease the end-of-year budget strain.

3. Stick to Your List

Quick store runs are part of holiday life — but they’re also where impulse buys sneak in. Before you head out, make a clear list of what you actually need and stick to it.

If something unplanned catches your eye, pause and ask: Does this align with my priorities? Will it stretch my budget? Having a list helps you shop with intention and minimize regret.

4. Shop Online + Pick Up In-Store

Curbside pickup has become a holiday hero. Not only does it help you avoid shipping fees and long delivery windows, but it also limits in-store temptations.

Many retailers offer same-day pickup, allowing you to shop online, earn kicks, and stay within your budget — all without waiting in checkout lines. It’s fast, efficient, and smart.

5. Go Homemade

Thoughtful doesn’t have to mean expensive. Homemade gifts are a heartfelt and budget-friendly way to show you care.

Whether it’s a batch of cookies, a DIY ornament, or a framed photo, handmade gifts add a personal touch to the season — and often mean more than store-bought ones.

Wrap Up the Season with Smart Spending

Holiday shopping doesn’t have to derail your budget. With a little planning, a few clever tricks, and help from apps like Shopkick, you can save money and still enjoy the magic of the season.

P.S. Haven’t redeemed your kicks yet? Now’s the time! Download the free Shopkick app, earn rewards just for shopping how you already do, and make the most of every last-minute trip.

Create Your Own Baseball Ballpark Inspired Menu

There’s a sport for every season, and the spring and summer are dominated by baseball. In fact, we think one of the best ways to spend a warm summer weeknight or sunny Saturday or Sunday is at a ballpark. We’re eager to cheer on our favorite teams, root for our favorite players, and sometimes jump in on the fun with friends as we play our own nine innings.

One of the reasons why we think we enjoy baseball so much, other than the fact that it’s a classic American sport, is because the food is delicious. Hotdogs, fries, ice cream, and popcorn are all ballpark menu staples. We thought we would round up 10 of our favorite recipes so you and your family and friends can enjoy the baseball menu fun from home!

Cherry-Vanilla Soda Syrup:

Rather than sharing a cocktail, we thought we would start things off with a drink you and your kids can all enjoy together! The Kitchn shared a recipe for homemade Cherry-Vanilla Soda Syrup that calls for five ingredients, including the soda you will mix it with. It sounds like a fun take on a Cherry Coke or Pepsi!

Pretzel Bites:

Pretzels are a classic food at a ballpark, so try making your own! What’s Gabby Cooking shared an easy recipe for pretzel bites that you can pair with mustard or your favorite sauce of choice. Gabby also shares other pretzel recipes on her site, like these Garlic Herb Parmesan Pretzel Twists.

Pigs in a Blanket:

Instead of serving classic hotdogs, mix things up and opt to make pigs in a blanket! When a recipe is called the Best Ever Pigs in a Blanket, there’s a high probability it’s the one you should use.

Olive Oil and Parmesan Popcorn:

We have a feeling you will turn to this popcorn recipe often, even when you’re not watching baseball! It calls for olive oil, grated parmesan cheese, and Italian seasoning. Gimme Some Oven is definitely on to something!

Garlic Fries:

Try your hand at making homemade French fries or purchase a ready-made pack – either option will work well! Once your fries are prepped, you will toss them in a garlic, butter, parmesan, and parsley mixture before baking them to create Garlic Fries.

Walking Tacos:

This recipe is called Walking Tacos, and it involves prepping all of the classics of a great taco, like meat, tomatoes, beans, and all of the toppings. Once everything is ready, open a bag of corn chips, and pop your taco favorites inside!

Honey Buffalo Meatball Sliders:

Typically, meatballs are most often served with sauce. But, this recipe calls for hot sauce, apricot preserves, blue cheese, and ranch dressing, so it offers a fun twist. If you try making Honey Buffalo Meatball Sliders, let us know what you think!

Deep-Dish Sausage Pizza:

Pizza is a game day classic, and if you want to feel as though you’re visiting Chicago deep-dish pizza is a must! This recipe will walk you through the steps to make your own crust as you craft Deep-Dish Sausage Pizza. We can’t wait to try it!

Turkey Burger:

It’s not a baseball game menu if there isn’t at least one burger recipe included! We spotted this recipe for turkey burgers, and we’re excited to try the Mexican version, which calls for topping the turkey burger with guacamole and salsa.

Strawberry Ice Cream:

To cap off your ballpark at-home menu, dessert is a must! Have you ever made your own ice cream? Celebrate baseball and strawberry season with this egg-less Strawberry Ice Cream recipe. Serve with chocolate sauce, extra strawberries, and waffle cones.

What will you include on your baseball menu for your next watch party at home? Let us know on Facebook!

Celebrate Her, Her Way: 5 Meaningful Mother’s Day Ideas

We love moms — and all the women who play a motherly role in our lives. From grandmas and aunts to cousins, friends, and chosen moms, Mother’s Day is all about honoring the women who show up with love, strength, and heart every day.

Whether you’re planning something big or keeping it simple, these Mother’s Day ideas are easy to pull off, full of love, and sure to make her feel appreciated.

1. Cook a Full Day of Delicious Meals

Give mom the gift of rest — and great food. Start the day with a cozy French toast casserole, whip up a savory toast or salad for lunch, and end with a dinner she’ll love, like tacos, burgers, or homemade pizza. Bonus points if she doesn’t have to lift a finger or clean up!

Shopkick tip: Grab your groceries at stores like Target, Walmart, or Sam’s Club and earn kicks in the process. Scan featured products or upload your receipt to rack up rewards while you shop.

2. Frame the Kids’ Art

Turn a favorite drawing into a keepsake. A simple frame can transform kids’ art into something she’ll treasure forever. Shop for frames at Target, Walmart, or even Amazon—and let the little ones create something just for her, especially if it features their handprints or sweet notes.

3. Create an At-Home Retreat

Bring the spa experience to her. Set up a cozy corner with her favorite book, run a bubble bath, or prep a quiet space with candles, a playlist, or her favorite snacks and drinks. A little solitude can go a long way in making her feel renewed.

4. Pick Your Own Flowers

Instead of a store-bought bouquet, visit a local flower farm and pick blooms together. It’s a beautiful way to enjoy the outdoors and make new memories. The final bouquet is more personal — and you’ll likely snap some great photos along the way.

5. Send Her to the Spa

Sometimes, the best gift is time to herself. A gift card to her favorite spa or salon gives her the freedom to relax how she chooses — whether that’s a massage, facial, or mani-pedi. Pair it with a handwritten note for a personal touch.

Celebrate Her, Her Way

Whatever Mother’s Day idea you choose, Shopkick makes it easy to earn while you shop. Download the free Shopkick app and collect kicks just by walking into stores, scanning items, uploading receipts, or shopping online. Then trade those kicks for gift cards to her favorite places — from Sephora to Target.

This Mother’s Day, celebrate her with love, creativity, and maybe even a few extra kicks.

3 Goals You Can Reach in 2021: Part 3

In case you’re just joining us, we’ve been detailing how to take steps toward nine of the most common goals people set every year in January. We’ve talked about how to workout and read more, how to stick to a budget, and how to lessen screen time (even during a pandemic!). There’s more for you to explore here and here.

As a reminder, we’re sharing simple steps you can start doing today to make goals a reality rather than something you simply write down. Today, we’re going to talk about the final three goals of the most popular annual goals: how to be more eco-friendly, how to stay organized, and how to try new recipes. Let’s keep the goal setting going!

Be More Eco-friendly:

Supporting and being kinder to our environment is an ongoing endeavor, rather than something we can solve in one swift motion. But, if we all make even small changes, they do add up! So, consider the ways your family lives, and think about ways you might be able to make revisions. Here are a few ideas:

Recycle: Many communities pick up recycling each week or there are centers within driving distance where you can drop off your recycling. Rather than tossing water bottles, soda bottles, jars, newspapers, and more into the trash, consider rinsing them and placing them into a recycling can instead.

Reusable Bottles & Dinnerware: Consider choosing to use a reusable water bottle throughout your day rather than single use plastic. You can also opt to skip using paper plates and plastic utensils and instead turn to everyday dinnerware that can be washed and used again and again.

Use Reusable Bags: When you make a trip to the grocery store, how many plastic bags do you typically leave carrying? Likely a lot, which is totally normal! Purchase a few reusable bags you can use each week to cut back on waste. The great thing about reusable bags is they can typically fit more than an average plastic bag, which means you’ll need to make fewer trips back and forth to your car to bring everything inside.

Get Organized:

Whenever the word “organize” is mentioned, typically feelings of overwhelm follow. But, they don’t have to! Rather than thinking you need to completely organize and overhaul your space at once, why not break things down into steps? Here are a few ideas:

Tackle One Area: This might look like a room, or it might look like a drawer! There aren’t rules about how slow or fast you need to organize.

Set a Timer: Think about seeing what you can get done in a block of time. Five, 10, 15, or 60 minutes will definitely allow you to make a dent or complete an entire project!

Look to the Pros: There are plenty of articles about organization, and some of them are definitely worth the read! We like this piece by Real Simple about how organization pros create order. The tips are 100% doable!

Tidy: Whether it’s at the end of the day or one day a week, think about tidying up your space. Organization doesn’t work unless you do, and your new process will take time to get used to. The key thing is remembering how you feel when everything is in order!

Try New Recipes:

If you’re becoming tired of your meal rotation, it’s likely time to mix it up. Consider trying even one new recipe each week.

Think about collecting recipes to try and pinning them onto a board on Pinterest. Move the ones you love to a new board after you’ve made them, and delete the ones you know you never want to make again. You can also mix things up by trying rotating through new recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack, so your list is never completely filled with recipes that have many steps (dinner recipes, we’re looking at you!).

We also post plenty of recipes in the app!

Now that we’ve reached the end of our review of some of the most popular goals and resolutions, which ones are on your list? Let us know on Facebook!

3 Goals You Can Achieve: Part 2

We’ve almost officially reached the middle of January! So, how are you doing with your goals? Have you set goals for the year, or are you still working through what you would like to accomplish this year? Keep in mind, there truly isn’t anything magical about January 1. You can set a goal and start taking small steps toward achieving it at any time!

Last week, we shared the first part of our goal setting series where we’re walking through some of the most popular goals people set each year. The fun part is we’re sharing simple steps you can do today to start working toward reaching each goal, rather than solely having them written down without a game plan. Today, we’re digging into how to read more, how to stick to a budget, and how to spend time with family and friends (yes, even during COVID-19; stay with us!). Keep reading, and make sure to tune back in next week for the third – and final – part of our series!

Read More:

If books are on your mind, we’re here to help! This goal definitely relates to spending less time on screens, but we thought it deserved its own section.

Consider starting slow by setting a goal to read 1 book/month. Then try to read 10-20 pages per day or set aside 15-30 minute windows of time to read. The best thing to do is to find a consistent window of time each day to carve out this routine!

Another idea is to read books that have been turned into movies or TV shows (we compiled a list that you can find here!). Knowing you can experience how a creative team took a book from the page to the screen can be a great motivator to finish a book.

If you’re looking for great books to enjoy throughout the year, Good Housekeeping released a list of the most anticipated books of 2021!

Stick to a Budget:

There are plenty of articles and tips about how to create and stick to a budget, but we’re here to share simple ways you can stay on track!

One place to easily spend more each week than you may have originally intended is at the grocery store. So, make a list before you shop. Then stick to your list even as you wander down the aisles. Another idea? Don’t shop when you’re hungry! Because we’ve done it, we can confirm the rumors are true: you do, in fact, purchase more if you shop while dreaming about your next meal or snack.

Another simple thing to do to keep your budget on track is to use Shopkick to your advantage! In between interacting with us on Instagram and Facebook, pop onto the app and explore the Discover page – glance through lookbooks, watch videos, and see how you can earn kicks on your next shopping trip. Once you reach your chosen kick goal, redeem your kicks for a gift card that you can use when you next pick up the essentials on your list. Shopkick is free to use! What budget tip could be better?

Spend More Time with Family & Friends:

COVID-19 has definitely changed how we spend time with family and friends and, of course, how often we can gather together. But, that shouldn’t stop you from checking in on your favorite people! Many of us are suffering from Zoom fatigue once we reach the end of the day or week, so we highly recommend taking what some might call an “old fashioned” approach: pick up the phone.

Plan a time to catch up with a friend or family member, and make it a weekly date! To feel even more connected, you can both plan to engage in the same activity, whether that’s talking while you’re taking individual walks, driving home from work, or catching up on chores (a phone call makes laundry more fun!). A call with someone you love will brighten your day!

We’re here to cheer you on! Keep sharing your progress with us on Facebook as we all work toward achieving our goals (and more) in 2021.

Top 5 Thanksgiving Hacks to Make Hosting Fun and Easy

When we think about Thanksgiving, family favorite recipes and visions of loved ones gathered together immediately comes to mind. During a year when we have spent more time apart from family and friends than ever before, a holiday spent (safely!) together sounds like an absolute delight.

Even though Thanksgiving is one of the most joyful holidays, there’s also an element of stress for the host. So, if you’re planning to host your first Thanksgiving or your fiftieth, keep reading! We’re sharing our own list of 5 tips and tricks to make this year’s hosting duties a breeze.

Top 5 Thanksgiving Hacks to Make Hosting Fun and Easy | www.shopkick.com

1. The Early Shopper Always Wins:

This year, Thanksgiving is on Thursday, November 26. You’re likely thinking you have plenty of time to shop – and you do! But, why wait until the week of Thanksgiving when grocery stores will be packed to purchase everything you need? Instead, start adding nonperishables and paper products (more on this below) to your pantry, especially if items are on sale. As the holiday approaches, you will only have items like turkey, vegetables, and any fruit still on your list.

2. “I’m attracted to pie.”

We’ve all heard that homemade recipes are the best recipes, but Lorelai Gilmore wouldn’t knock pre-made pie and neither should you! Consider picking up a pre-made pie or use pre-made pie crust for your pumpkin pie recipe. By purchasing pre-made where you can, you can still add a homemade twist. The difference is the time needed will be far less and will feel much more doable.

3. Warm it Up:

Most Thanksgiving dishes require differing temperatures and timelines for cooking, so warming settings will prove helpful. Consider using slow cookers to keep dishes, like mashed potatoes, stored and warm. You can also use thermoses to keep gravy warm, and you can always warm things up in the microwave.

4. Dress Down Your Code:

If ever there was a year for a casual dress code, 2020 is the year! While we do suggest wearing something other than your daytime pajamas, encouraging your family and friends to arrive in clothes they feel comfortable wearing will create a more relaxed atmosphere. This year, the focus is truly on spending time together.

5. Make Cleanup a Breeze

Holidays are typically when we all like to use the “good china”, but why? On holidays, we’re joined by more people than those who typically sit around our tables on an everyday basis. That means more cleanup! To make cleanup a breeze, opt for paper products for everything from plates and napkins to silverware and cups. The added bonus of paper products this year is you won’t be washing used items (a great added safety layer during Covid).

6 Spaces to Organize at Home

In between planning safe ways to celebrate Halloween and completing fun apple crafts, we have been thinking about other ways we can spend time at home as days become cooler and shorter. Our brainstorming sessions have led us to want to make our homes even cozier, so organizing is definitely on the horizon!

When you hear or see the word “organize”, your mind may wander to thoughts of full days spent cleaning and big spaces becoming decluttered. That sounds overwhelming to us! So, instead, we have smaller areas and projects on our minds. From your hall closet to your kids’ playroom (and a few additional spaces in between), here are the spaces we’ll be organizing and how you can join in too.

1. Closet:

No, we’re not suggesting you pour through your entire closet and decide which items “spark joy” like Marie Kondo. Instead, set aside 15-30 minutes to organize your hall closet or laundry room.

Place coats you and your family will wear during the fall and winter front and center and possibly relocate items you know you won’t need or wear again until the spring or summer. Then review hats, gloves, and scarves. Does every glove have a match? Does everything you own still fit? Do you like the items in the closet? Plan to toss or donate anything that no longer fits the bill.

For even more organization, think about investing in baskets or clear Tupperware containers for each person in your family. Then place their hats, gloves, and scarves inside their baskets or bins. It’s a great way to keep an eye on everyone’s things while establishing a go-to spot for each person.

2. Kitchen Drawers:

We spend a lot of time in our kitchens, and the space becomes even more of a hub during the fall and winter. So, organize your drawers!

Go through your kitchen gadgets and review what you have. Does everything work? Do you use all of the items? What can you toss? What do you need to repurchase? Throw items away, create a pile to donate, and make a list of anything new you would like to add.

Another idea? Purchase organizers for drawers that have always housed loose items, and make your utensil drawer look pristine.

3. Pantry:

Your entire family likely visits your pantry multiple times per day, so it can become disorganized quickly and easily. Set aside time to get the space back in order!

Consider reviewing expiration dates to make sure all of your products are still usable. Then review where everything is placed and decide if that works best for your family. We’ve found having zones in a pantries works well. For example, dry ingredients for dinner are together, condiments are grouped together, breakfast foods have a space, and snacks have a nook too. We also know families who have opted to purchase organizers to keep specific things together!

Ideally, your pantry should be a spot anyone in your family can visit, find what they need quickly, and close the door again.

4. Refrigerator:

Similar to your pantry, your refrigerator is another frequently visited area in your kitchen. So, are the items in it all up to date? Consider making sure condiments and other food items haven’t expired. Decide if you’re going to eat any leftovers. Make sure foods are grouped together (your crisper really does keep fruit and vegetables fresh longer!).

If you want to take things to the next level, reimagine how you store food and drinks in your refrigerator. Consider taking water bottles, juice boxes, and soda out of the boxes or plastic it may arrive in, and place each container loose inside. You may even want to invest in organizers to keep the interior even more organized!

5. Desk:

Many of us continue to work from home or perhaps you’ve worked from home for years. When was the last time you organized your desk? The top is likely fairly polished, but your drawers may not have been organized for a while.

Think about removing everything from your desk’s interior and reviewing it. Decide if you need to keep all of the items. Review paperwork that may need to be placed in another spot for safe keeping, and toss anything you no longer need. Another thing to do: test your pens, pencils, and markers. Then toss what has dried up and place items that are the same in cups or bags.

Knowing your workspace is organized both outside and inside will definitely help your productivity during the days and weeks to come!

6. Kids’ Playroom:

Your kids’ playroom is definitely the largest project to take on. But, you can definitely tackle this room in stages, which means you can take on specific areas at a time.

If you want to tackle the whole room, open all closets, storage containers, and bins so you can see everything your kids own. Then review and organize items area-by-area. Take care to consider how often your kids play with specific toys, whether or not they may have outgrown items, and if there are pieces you know are missing. You may even find you want to rotate toys into new areas. For example, toys you wish your kids enjoyed more or those you know they love might be best in prominent, easy to reach areas. On the flip side, toys that require help or supervision might be best further out of reach.

Another thing to do is to tackle specific areas at a time. For example, you might spend time reviewing books or dolls or Legos. Decide what you would like to keep, toss, and donate. Then review another section another day. Organizing anything one grouping at a time will add up as you go, and you will know you have been thoughtful with your efforts!

Some may find it helpful to organize the space without their kids present, while others may want to involve kids in the process. Neither option is wrong! Whatever you do, make sure the process and the organization method you choose is something your kids can either help you to maintain or maintain on their own.

How to Safely Celebrate Halloween

For many of us, Halloween is a holiday we look forward to all year long. It’s a chance to get creative, join together with friends and family to dress up, enjoy all of our favorite treats, and maybe attend a party of two. And, that’s before we even mention all of the fun that Halloween has in store for kids from costumes and school parties to parades and trick-or-treating. Needless to say, we are with you in searching for fun and easy ways to safely celebrate Halloween this year. So, we’re sharing five ways to celebrate Halloween from home!

Carve Pumpkins:

Aside from trick-or-treating, the most quintessential Halloween activity is definitely carving pumpkins. So, plan to purchase pumpkins just like you do every other year! Then choose your pattern or carve your pumpkin free-hand. You could even encourage a little friendly competition amongst family and friends and ask participants to virtually cast votes for their favorite designs. The winner gets a gift card to purchase their favorite treat!

Decorate + Drive:

Similar to carving pumpkins, plan to decorate your house this year. Big and bold designs are always fun to see, and the neighbors in your community will love driving by to catch their own glimpse. On Halloween (or even before!) plan to drive through your town with your family to peek at all of the decorated homes.

To make this idea a little more social, you might think about decorating your car for Halloween and meeting at a friend’s house for a drive-by Halloween parade. Your kids can even put on their costumes!

Make DIY Costumes:

This is definitely the year to dive into more involved projects at home, so think about creating your own Halloween costumes with your kids. Something as simple as a cardboard box can go a long way (and we all have plenty of those after shopping online throughout the year!). Then save your costumes to enjoy long after Halloween as you replenish your dress up box with new one-of-a-kind outfits for fun, imaginative play.

Do a Halloween Candy Scavenger Hunt:

Candy is synonymous with Halloween, but trick-or-treating might not feel like the safest idea this year. So, purchase bags of your kids’ favorite Halloween treats and plan your own scavenger hunt (like an Easter egg hunt!). Hide candy inside your home or outside in your yard and encourage your kids to dress up while they search for their treats. You can even set a timer to see who can find the most candy the fastest! Post hunt, unwind with chili, candy, and a Halloween movie.

Watch a Halloween Film:

As we mentioned briefly above, plan to watch a Halloween movie! We love enjoying a Halloween classic like “Hocus Pocus”, “Casper”, or “The Adams Family”. Maybe this is the year when you gather for a movie marathon and watch more than one! Plan to pop popcorn and enjoy your favorite candy or dipped apples. If the weather allows, you can even project your family’s Halloween movie choice onto a sheet or screen in your backyard.

Fall Apple Crafts for Kids

There are many reasons to celebrate the arrival of fall, and we think one of them is definitely the start of apple season! We highly recommend choosing an afternoon to go apple picking in your local area. But, if apple picking isn’t quite your speed, there are still plenty of ways to craft with them. We’ve scoured the web to find five apple crafts we think kids of many different ages will enjoy. Let’s jump in!

Apple Stamping:

Kids love to paint, and apples make wonderful stamps. We found two apple stamping tutorials that you should try! One involves creating an apple basket, while the other will lead your littles to make painted apples with faces you can hang. This is a simple way to encourage your kids’ creativity and love for color!

Apple Weaving:

If you have kids that are slightly older, challenge their fine motor skills with this apple weaving craft. You will need cardboard, paint, ribbon, and a few extra (common!) tools. Weaving is great because it acts as a great way for kids to create patterns using texture and color, and the apple is a fun seasonal touch.

Apple Watercolor:

By using makers and water on coffee filters, your kids can create their own unique watercolor art. The great thing about this craft is you likely have the core supplies at home, which means you won’t have to spend additional money. We love that the end result is apples with a creative twist you can hang up all season long!

Apple Sun Catchers:

To add new seasonal fun to your windows, think about creating apple sun catchers! We found two different tutorials to create new accessories for your windows, and both are equally unique. The first involves collecting fallen autumn leaves in your yard and then piecing them together to create a sun catcher. The second involves creating apple shapes using plastic beads. You can’t go wrong!

Apple Keepsake:

Kids grow and change quickly, so it’s sweet to make and hang up crafts that include their hands and feet. This apple keepsake asks makers to stamp their painted feet onto paper and then turn the stamp into an apple. You could also create a similar look by repeatedly stamping a finger. Either way, the result is a project you will treasure for years.

8 Healthy After School Snacks

No matter if your kids are learning in school or from home as they start the new year, there is one thing we all know for certain: the joy of an after-school snack has not changed! Like you, we’re fans of this ritual because we know students are hungry after a day at school. We also know how an after-school snack can bring families together for at least a few moments of conversation to share about their day so far. In case you’re searching for new recipes to make after-school snacking more fun, delicious, and healthy, we dug into the archives to uncover eight recipes that definitely fit the bill.

Peach Melba Ice Pops:

It’s still warm in most areas of the country, so a popsicle was a must for our after-school snack list! These popsicles from Women’s Day combine vanilla yogurt, almond extract, peaches, and raspberries together for a cool and healthy treat.

Chocolate-Dipped Frozen Banana Bites:

Bananas are a go-to healthy after-school snack on their own, and when you mix in the option to add chocolate and freeze them they seem like a must-have! These Chocolate-Dipped Frozen Banana Bites from The Kitchn are simple, and they sound delicious.

Guacamole for One:

Have you ever wondered how to make a single serving of guacamole? Brit + Co has the answer with this recipe! They even suggest serving it in half of an avocado to make your cleanup even more swift. Just add chips!

Cheddar, Zucchini, and Scallion Muffins:

Sometimes carbs a must after-school, and this Cheddar, Zucchini, and Scallion Muffin recipe combines carbs together with savory flavors. These will be a hit as a snack, and we can also envision serving these at breakfast, lunch, or dinner. They will go fast!

Parmesan Ranch Snack Mix:

If you’re looking for a new take on a classic snack recipe, take a look at this Parmesan Ranch Snack Mix from Averie Cooks. This snack mix will be ready in minutes because it doesn’t need to bake. Instead, prepare to combine popcorn, pretzels, nuts, ranch seasoning, and parmesan cheese together. We think this will be a frequent request after school!

Smoothie Bowls:

No matter the time of day, Smoothie Bowls are always a great idea! Take a look at this recipe from Women’s Day that pairs raspberries, bananas, yogurt, granola, and coconut together for a hearty and healthy post-school snack. Keep this recipe on hand for breakfast too!

Pizza Toast:

Have you ever made pizza on toast? You can now give it a try thanks to this recipe from Delish! You will need toast (obviously!), pizza sauce, cheese, favorite toppings, and a touch of parsley. Once you prep your toast, place it in the oven at 350 degrees until the cheese melts. Then, enjoy!

Celery Snails & Caterpillars:

You have likely had celery and peanut butter, but have you ever turned your celery into snails? With a how-to from Women’s Day located within this recipe, you and your kids can make the recipe and complete a craft at the same time. Make sure you have celery, cucumber, fruits, peanut butter and/or cream cheese on hand. Have fun!

10 Summertime Peach Recipes

One of the best parts of summer is definitely the fruit that is in season! As we celebrate August, we have a new fruit season to celebrate too: peach season! This sweet, sometimes tart, and always delicious summertime fruit is wonderful for both sweet and savory meals, desserts, and (of course!) drinks. We love the great variety offered by peaches.

We also love that many pick-your-own farms present you with the fun opportunity to pick your own bounty with your family. During a time when family outings (or outings in general!) feel a little more complicated as we try to keep our social distance, a visit to a farm to pick fruit combined with a recipe challenge offers a fun and memorable way to spend a day, night, or even a full weekend.

Keep reading below for 10 summer recipes you can make with peaches!

10 Summertime Peach Recipes:

Raspberry Peach Lemonade:

Lemonade is a classic summer drink, and Damn Delicious ups the fun with her take on Raspberry Peach Lemonade. Your kids will love this summery drink!

Easy Homemade Peach Jam:

We couldn’t share a post about fruit without finding a great recipe for jam. The reason why we’re intrigued by this Easy Homemade Peach Jam recipe is because Scattered Thoughts of a Crafty Mom makes it without pectin (an ingredient that can sometimes make jam feel complicated to master).

Easy Baked Peaches:

We have talked about grilling peaches in the past, which you can definitely do. But, we also wanted to highlight a great recipe for baking them. I Heart Naptime shared this recipe for Easy Baked Peaches that also introduces cinnamon sugar topping. We definitely recommend following her lead and completing this sweet combo with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for a wonderful summertime dessert.

Peach Wine Slushies:

To make your glass of wine more fun and summery, turn it into a slushie! Of course, it’s even more delectable when you add peaches. These Peach Wine Slushies from Dessert for Two take minutes to make.

Spicy Peach & Avocado Salad:

We’re fans of summertime salads, and this Spicy Peach & Avocado Salad from Country Living sounds like a great take! It combines peaches together with avocados and a Fresno Chile pepper for a great kick. If you don’t love spicy foods, we think the salad would be equally as tasty sans pepper.

One Skillet Peach Glazed Chicken:

Meals that can be made in a single pot, skillet, or pan are always up our alley. When we spotted this One Skillet Peach Glazed Chicken recipe from The Seasoned Mom we added it to our “to make” list right away! The prep time for this dinner dish is 5 minutes. Need we say more?

Peach Mango Coconut Oil Banana Bread:

Our passion for banana bread continues, and Averie Cooks shared a Peach, Mango, & Coconut Oil Banana Bread recipe that combines three amazing fruits together! The great news is this recipe includes coconut oil for a healthier option.

Turkey, Brie & Peach Panini:

A panini is a wonderful way to make lunch more fun, and Foxes Love Lemons created a Turkey, Brie & Peach Panini! It combines all of the flavors you would think, plus arugula, brie, and Dijon mustard.

Slow-Cooked Peach Salsa:

The summer is meant for salsa, and it’s always fun to create your own. Taste of Home shared a recipe for Slow-Cooked Peach Salsa that makes plenty of servings (11 cups!) after cooking for three hours. This would be excellent for a Mexican themed taco night!

Georgia Peach Homemade Ice Cream:

Rather than purchasing ice cream from the grocery store, why not try your hand at creating your own at home? This Georgia Peach Homemade Ice Cream recipe from All Recipes has over 400 positive reviews, and the results sound incredible.

We can’t wait to hear about the peach recipes you make! Fill us in on Facebook, and make sure to share any peach recipes you love that we have yet to discover.

Camp Shopkick: Camping Week

We’re back with the latest theme for this week’s edition of Camp Shopkick! In case you’re new to “camp”, we believe summer isn’t summer without themed weeks of fun to enjoy with your family, whether you try a new activity each day or plan a packed day to fit in as much as possible. We hope you and your family have already made wonderful memories during Barbecue Week and Family Fun Week. This week, we’re taking “camp” literally – it’s Camping Week!

Have you ever taken a camping trip? Whether you’re an outdoor camping novice, someone who frequently pitches a tent in the backyard, or a camper with plenty of experience in the great outdoors, we thought we would dive into everything you need to know to take a camping trip at a campground. Let’s dive into the essentials!

Where to Go:

Once you have decided camping is officially on your agenda, it’s time to decide where to go. Parks are a great place to begin your research because many offer both camping facilities (wash houses are wonderful!), campsites, and plenty of information to review before you arrive. You can also look into official campgrounds. These can range from sites you will need to hike to, to locations where you will drive up and keep your car parked nearby. Some sites even include amenities, like pools, to encourage you to have even more family fun while meeting other families in the process.

What to Do:

When deciding where you would like to go on your camping trip, you will also likely need to decide what you hope to do as a family while you’re there. One decision will help to guide many others! Many camping sites are located in wonderful areas to hike. If hiking will be a new experience for your family, you will want to research trails that are clearly marked for beginners. Some trails are even flat, which are excellent for young kids! You will also want to be prepared in advance to swim, so research if your camp is near a stream, lake, or beach open to water play.

Must-Have Items:

Some of your must-have items will largely be driven by the activities you plan to do while you’re camping, but there are also plenty of other items you will want to have on hand. Keep the following in mind:

  • Tent (P.S: One Crazy House has plenty of tent tips!)
  • Foam Flooring/Air Mattress
  • Sleeping Bag
  • Clothes
  • Flash Light
  • Kitchen Items & Food
  • Toiletries
  • Hiking Gear
  • Toys for Kids
  • …and plenty more!

We discovered this packing guide for camping, particularly camping with kids, on the blog Em for Marvelous. Make sure to open the PDF she created titled Master Packing List. It’s excellent and so thorough!

Recipes to Cook:

Before you set out on your camping trip, you will want to create a meal plan. This will help you to know what you will be making well in advance, so you can make sure to have all of your groceries on hand. Cooking over a fire is a must while camping, and we thought we would think beyond hamburgers and hotdogs. So, we highly recommend trying Camping Breakfast Burritos from Taste & Tell, Grilled Cheesy Buffalo Bacon Fries from Tablespoon, and Campfire Philly Cheesesteak Sandwiches from Homemade Heather. All three recipes sound delicious!

Of course, our top tip is to simply have fun on your camping trip! We are so excited to hear about the adventures you either experience or plan to experience on a camping trip with your family. Keep us in the know on Facebook!

Camp Shopkick: Family Fun Week

The summer fun themes continue, Shopkickers! Last time, we shared activities, recipes, and even crafts for you and your family to enjoy with your grill in mind. And, this week, we’re back with 10 new ways you and your family and play together in your backyard this summer and well into the fall. Let’s get started!

Tie-Dye:

Tie-dye is the must-do craft this summer, and we think it’s because it’s quick and easy (albeit a little messy!). There are all-in-one kits for sale online from most craft stores, and we also discovered great tutorials from the dye brand, Rit. On their site, Rit shares new methods for creating tie-dye patterns, how to best prep your fabric before you dye it, and even faster ways to encourage your pieces to dry. Take a look!

Open a Little Free Library:

This summer, we have been reading non-stop! Although we have all largely been keeping our physical distance from our friends and neighbors, one fun way to help your community to feel more connected is by building a Little Free Library for your neighborhood. The idea is neighbors can stop by and take a new book, and the hope is they will add a new or used book to your library in return.

Put on a Play:

Put your family’s acting skills to the test and put on a play or talent show! You can encourage your kids to create a show of their own or have them recreate an old favorite. You can also encourage them to show off their talents. If friends and family want to see the debut performance, encourage them to stop by with masks and their own chairs placed 6’ apart.

Design a Fairy Garden:

We have suggested planting vegetable and fruit gardens, and flower gardens are always a given. But, we have a new garden idea: create a fairy garden! Country Living has great inspiration for you to use to create one of your own at home.

Jump Rope:

Whether your kids have already experienced the old-fashioned fun of jump rope games or they have yet to play, embrace this classic game at home! For new jumpers, consider having them begin by jumping rope on grass. This way if someone does trip, they’re falling on a soft surface rather than on hard pavement.

Make Popsicles:

What is summer without a cool treat to enjoy outside? Try your hand at making your own popsicles. With a few simple ingredients, you can create smoothie inspired popsicles your kids will love making and eating. Thank you to Lemon Tree Dwelling for sharing this delicious recipe! If you’re allergic to dairy, try adding extra fruit and orange juice in lieu of yogurt.

Add Swings:

If you have a large tree in your yard that feels like it’s simply waiting for a swing, now is the time to install one! Try shopping online, make your own, or stop by your local hardware store for a pre-made option. Another idea? Install a porch or deck swing!

Play Mini Golf:

Put your golfing skills to the test from home! Consider purchasing a mini golf set to enjoy in your backyard, or task your kids with coming up with a course for everyone to play. Don’t forget your clubs, balls, and scorecards!

Play Life-Size Memory:

We love playing backyard games because they feel even more fun when they’re life-sized. So, try creating your own version of memory! Make the cards big enough to create a large game in your backyard on your lawn. Who can match the cards the quickest?

Car Wash:

With soap, sponges, and a hose, you can create a few hours of fun for your kids outside with a car wash! Think about having them help you to wash the family’s cars, or create a “kid’s car wash” where they wash their own bikes and scooters. Everything could likely use a good clean. Why not make an afternoon out of this form of water fun?

How has your family been spending time outside together in your backyard this summer? Chime in on Facebook with your ideas!

Camp Shopkick: Barbecue Week

Our summers may look different this year, but that means it’s time to get creative and make sure all of the fun of summer’s past is still in the mix at your home! To help you foster meaningful memories with your family, we’re launching Camp Shopkick. We believe it’s not summer unless your weeks are themed with plenty of activities, so we’ll be introducing a new batch of fun each week. To kick things off, it’s Barbecue Week!

Prep Your Grill:

Grilling is a summer family favorite, and there isn’t a week that goes by when we’re not cooking lunch or dinner outside over the flame. With that in mind, it’s important to keep your grill clean. For that task, we turned to the pros from Home Depot who shared this step-by-step article on how to clean charcoal and gas grills. Take a look!

Do a Craft:

Any experienced summer camper knows that a week at camp simply must include a craft! If you and your kids are going to be cooking on your grill, we thought you might want to add to your attire.

When we spotted these no-sew DIY aprons from Say Yes, we knew we had found the ideal craft for you to make with your kids. All you need is a dish towel (the author scored a $1 towel from Ikea), bonding tape, glue and glue gun, ribbon, fabric scissors, and an iron. The steps are simple, and this craft can be completed in no time. Plus, your kids will have a new apron to wear!

If your kids love to paint, another idea is to purchase canvas or fabric aprons and fabric paint. Encourage your little ones to paint their own designs on aprons for them or aprons for the adults they love. A sentimental idea is to have them add their handprints. These are pieces you will use and treasure for years to come!

Get Cooking:

Of course, the ultimate goal with grilling is to create new recipes. To help you to cook something new, here are a few ideas:

  1. We shared three new-to-use recipes in the Shopkick app. As a fun hint: None of our recipes include hamburgers! We’re thinking beyond the classics.
  2. Check out this blog where we shared fruits, vegetables, and complete meals you can make on your grill. Pineapple, peaches, quesadillas, and pizza are all on the menu!
  3. Epicurious is a wonderful source for recipes for kids! Their team rounded up 16 barbecue recipes for kids that reach beyond hotdogs on their site. Take a look!

Have fun at camp during Barbecue Week, Shopkickers! Let us know what your family makes on Facebook.

Simple Ways to Get Outdoors This Summer

Summer feels a little different right now, so we have to take matters into our own hands and make the most of it! We are all definitely not trapped inside, so let’s keep making sure to get outside into the fresh air. Whether you’re a homebody or an adventurer, we’re sharing fun and simple ways to get outside, and we think you’ll find a perfect match among these suggestions!

Host a Cookout

Not feeling up to planning a full day trip or excursion? Why not spend the day with loved ones by hosting a backyard barbecue?! While this may not be the most outdoorsy option, you’re bound to have a good time. Get creative by putting your own twist on classic recipes to make new traditions in your household. Plus, get active by pulling out a soccer ball or corn hole boards to get a little friendly competition going. Kids not around? Throw it back to your college years and dust off the old beer pong skills. Whatever activities you enjoy, getting out into the sun is key!

Start a Garden

Whether you have a small plot of land in your yard or a little planter box on your balcony, you can turn it into something beautiful and beneficial! Just by putting in a little bit of research into the types of plants that will thrive in your environment or based on the level of care you want to commit to, you’ll find something great that works for you. Will fresh herbs or tomatoes elevate your cooking? Will your favorite flowers (we love wildflowers and sunflowers!) liven up your space? Let’s find out! Grab some soil, seeds, and get to work!

Check Out a Local Park

No matter where you live, there’s a park nearby to explore! An easy way to get out into a greener environment is to check out open, public spaces. Maybe it’s a metro park, neighborhood park, dog park, or even national park. Make a day out of it by bringing the kids, dog, frisbee, and picnic. Just getting some fresh air and a change of scenery can make a huge difference if you feel stuck in a tired schedule.

Go for a Hike (or Walk)

Hey outdoor enthusiast! You’re our type of gal/guy. A great way to get outside and embrace the natural world around you is to find a trail and get those steps in. Maybe you have a favorite hiking trail, or maybe you want to take up hiking as a new hobby. Either way, a great place to start is alltrails.com! You can plug in your location and find a spot that fits your desired location, activity, difficulty level, length, and so much more. Enjoy the warmer months by getting out and exploring nature!

If a strenuous hike isn’t really your thing, you can still get moving with a low-intensity walk around similar trails, parks (see above), or even your neighborhood. Got kids? Building healthy habits and fun hobbies together like going on walks as a family is a great bonding opportunity.

Go Camping

If you’re really vying for a chance to get away from home, try planning a camping trip. It’s super easy to go online and reserve a campsite at a drive-in campground, or you could even backpack into a remote area if you’re feeling ambitious. Either way, just being immersed in nature and soaking up the sights, sounds, and smells can bring peace of mind and soul. Getting out of the house and finding adventure and/or tranquility within the natural world is an easy way to have a vacation on a budget. If you don’t have the time or energy to round up the troops and get away for the weekend, try pitching a tent in your backyard to have a fun but low-stress “getaway” with the kids!

Fruit Picking

It’s summer fruit season (a personal favorite of ours)! If day trips are more your speed, fruit picking is a fun, quick way to try something new, get out into the sun, and get your grocery shopping done. There are lots of fruits and veggies in season this time of year, so check out berry patches, stone fruit (peaches, nectarines, etc.) orchards, and local vegetable gardens that allow you to pick your own produce. If something like this doesn’t exist in your area, try hitting up a farmer’s market! You’ll still be able to find the freshest goods and greens, but the hard part of harvesting is already done for you.

5 Quick Work from Home Summer Lunch Recipes

During a season of spending more time at home than ever before, we’ve discovered one of the greatest perks is having a complete kitchen at our fingertips. This change has allowed us to have the freedom to mix up our lunch routine, and we have enjoyed trying new recipes. Now that summer is officially here, we have been wanting to try lighter fare that’s cool and refreshing while still packing a serious flavorful punch. So, we’re sharing five quick and easy summer lunch recipes you can either make in minutes before enjoying them or prep and enjoy throughout the week!

Chickpea Salad Sandwich:

If you’re looking for a new twist on a classic salad sandwich, try Real Simple’s Chickpea Salad Sandwich recipe! It still combines many of the classic ingredients used in chicken salad, but the biggest difference is in the name – chickpeas are used instead of meat. Prep the chickpea mash in advance and make in moments at lunchtime!

Broccoli Salad:

We love when salads are known to be even more delicious the next day or even a few days later as they are when they’re prepped fresh from the fridge, and this Broccoli Salad from Love and Lemons definitely fits the bill! It combines broccoli together with red onions, cranberries, and almonds. If you want to add meat for extra protein, we think chicken would taste delicious.

Easy Pasta Salad:

If you read our post about recipes to enjoy with a single box of pasta, you’ll remember we noted pasta is great in salads! So, we when spotted this Easy Pasta Salad recipe from Love and Lemons, we knew we needed to include it. Similar to the Broccoli Salad above, this is another recipe you can enjoy for several days. Pasta, cucumber, feta cheese, arugula, and chickpeas are a few of the ingredients in this salad, and there’s also instructions to create a homemade dressing.

Egg Avocado Toast:

Avocado toast continues to be a staple, so who can argue with enjoying a new-to-us recipe for lunch? How Sweet Eats introduced us to her Egg Avocado Toast recipe, which includes shaved egg from a hardboiled egg you can prep in advance, avocado, radishes, chives, and salt and pepper. This recipe could not be easier, which means it will be on repeat this summer!

Asian Chicken Salad:

Damn Delicious shared an Asian Chicken Salad recipe, and it’s filled with bright colors. We’re certain it has plenty of bold flavors too! To create this recipe, you will want to have romaine lettuce, cabbage, mandarin oranges, chow mein noodles, and carrots on hand. Plus, she mentions cooking chicken at home, which would be delicious. But, we think adding rotisserie chicken would add just as much flavor while saving time (if needed!).

6 Free Virtual Summer Camps for Kids

Camp is a staple for many kids and parents during the summer because it offers kids of all ages a chance to have fun, explore their interests, and experience a structured environment. This year may look different with many camps opting to remain closed for the season and families choosing to stay home and stay safe amid the coronavirus pandemic. However, organizations throughout the country (and the world!) are rallying together to make summer camp continue to be a reality! Today, we thought we would round up six of the best virtual summer camps we have discovered that are completely FREE.

San Diego Zoo:

When COVID-19 began, the San Diego Zoo was quick to begin offering resources for families to enjoy at home. And, their We’re Here Together campaign has continued! Perfect for animal loving kids of all ages, the San Diego Zoo’s website is packed with live video cameras (there’s 13 different live streams to enjoy!), hands-on activities, games, the Zoo’s own newspaper geared for kids, and much more.

Note: It’s not free, but we did want to mention Woof Wag Dogs’ virtual summer camp for kids and their dogs! It sounds like a wonderful opportunity for both to bond together through dog training, education, and more.

YouTube:

If your kids have multiple interests, encourage them to explore them all through #CampYouTube! Complete video series are available online with topics ranging from STEM and arts to sports and adventure. The YouTube team has also made sure to round up videos that offer educational opportunities for kids about topics like racism. Plus, they can learn to cook and create simple DIYs. Make sure to scroll to the bottom for the Bingo boards!

Met Opera:

For kids who come alive when listening to, learning about, or performing music, encourage their interest by having them attend virtual summer camp with the famed Met Opera. Each week, the Met launches a new summer camp theme, and they’re all based around a well-known opera. There are daily live sessions streamed on their Facebook page (make sure to choose the time targeted to your child’s age!), activities, and a chance to watch the week’s opera performed by the Met’s professional singers.

Best Buy:

If you’ve been reading our blog for a while or have visited our app, you know we’re big fans of Best Buy! They’re known for their skilled Geek Squad team, and we discovered they have a Geek Squad camp where kids can learn all about tech, science, and coding. The camp is called Geek Squad Academy at Home, and your kids can explore topics at their own pace with free PDFs. Get ready because they’re about to learn the ins and outs of computers, how to capture their own photos, how to build a website, and how to create their own video game.

KiwiCo:

If you have little campers at home, get to know KiwiCo. Their crates are beloved by kids and families alike, and they launched an online summer camp that allows your camper to attend at their own pace. Simply sign up, choose your sessions or topics, and let your camper dive in! There are camps for kids of different ages from as young as three to older than 11, and they explore everything from art to engineering. If you want to enhance your camper’s experience, they do have an option to purchase one of their themed crates geared toward your child’s chosen session.

Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami:

We wanted to make sure to include a camp for art-loving kids, and the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami’s virtual camp could not be better! If you are local to Miami, you will be able to pick up your camper’s art supplies in person at no charge, but they also created a supply list so you can pick up any materials on your own. There are basic and more advanced camps available for varied ages, and each one is taught by a professional art instructor daily over Zoom for an hour and a half. At the end of camp, MOCA will feature the best student work online in a virtual exhibition!

We’re in this together, Shopkickers. Let’s make it a fun summer for all!
